Jordan Truck & Haul have been operating their business since the mid 1980s. They've delivered goods for nearly every major industry in the nation and for 20 plus years, business was booming as they've traversed the country in all weather for all clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Jordan was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Few customers were ever late on bills and those clients who were, were sure to turn in their late payments within a reasonable amount of time. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. It was just one year later, in 2008, when the economy in the United States took a sharp decline, and both large and small businesses started to notice the squeeze on their pocketbooks: everyone had suddenly gone silent. Business slowed down. Worse still, it was noticed by Jordan in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. And as spring turmed to summer and summer into the early days of fall, Manuel Burns, CEO of Jordan felt a chill go down his spine whenever he would look at the weekly A/R reports. The number of clients who were late in their payments was continuing to grow.He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. Perhaps they were unable to pay their debt to him, but were able to meet the costs of a lesser service. But after doing the cursory research for this and talking to friends in the field, he found that alas, no, customers of Jordan hadn't gone elsewhere. They had just gone home. This current state-of-affairs was causing Manuel Burns to have some very restless nights. Manuel was very concerned, because there were constant overheads, goods to ship, employees to pay, and trucks which needed to be maintained, but there just wasn't the money coming back into the business. After work he would confide in his wife, Tiffany, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""Lin, I have a really bad feeling,"" he would say with deep woe.""Well, what do you think it is?"" she would ask.Manuel would stare off for a moment and then close eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them on the road, delivering good to all his loyal customers. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. What on earth was happening to create the death of his business?""I know what it is,"" Manuel said. ""I've relied too long on the profits I receive from invoices alone. I've let too many of our customers go too long without paying on their bills."" Linda could only grab her husband's hand and look at him lovingly, ""It's a hard economy. It might be awhile until things get settled up.

""Manuel knew his wife meant well, but he knew that he was responsible for too many people to sit idly by, waiting for the sun to peak over the clouds. The next day Manuel strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Jordan money. This wasn't really a very efficient way for a Chief Executive to spend his day, and Manuel knew he should be overseeing all the other sides of the business, such as shipments and deliveries, approaching prospective customers, or working with his sales team. But, he felt like he was doing something proactive to help his business, even though he had staff on salary to do just that thing. A waste of time - a waste of money - he had the best intentions, but all the while Manuel was realising just how much trouble he was in.Poor Manuel spent the whole morning trying in vain to contact his debtors: they promised to call back, dodged his calls, or made small interest-only payments. He was beginning to feel quite despaired when his secretary knocked on his door.

""Manuel, can I have a word?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Sure thing Annie, come on in."" Manuel leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Annieerely.""Well, I did a little searching this afternoon and tried to figure out a way out of this mess Manuel."" She pulled a small stack of papers from a folder and set them on the desk before him.""Have you ever heard the word factoring?"" she asked.""It sounds vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said.""Well,"" she began, ""Its actually quite simple really.

So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""""Immediately?"" Manuel interrupted.""Immediately, yes"" she added, ""It's actually very simple. We start by having a professional account manager review our figures and help us set up a company profile. Included in the profile would be the investigation of our accounts receivable aging reports, our current customers' credit limits etc.. In addition, factoring will assist in determining our customers' creditworthiness, independent from their credit relationship with our company. It provides a very broad view.Manuel replied cautiously ""I see - and what happens then?Following the completion of their review and once we've been approved for a contract with the factoring company, then we sit down to negotiate conditions and terms. You'll be surprised at the amount of flexibility, all dependent upon the credit histories and business volume.

This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. Once we arrive at a mutual agreement, the funding begins.Manuel was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""It sounds too good to be true, Annie,"" he said.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But think about it, Manuel: they've guaranteed that experts will do all the paperwork, and that will free us up to do what we should be doing - focusing on our customers in good standing, and that kind of stuff. They appear to be very flexible, Manuel,"" she drew a circle around a paragraph on the document before him.""Just how flexible?"" asked Manuel.""They personalize the factoring rates so that the amount they are willing to take on is commensurate with our needs and our clients debt. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"It does all sound pretty good, remembering that we're all tapped out now with loans from the bank last year to repair vehicles, and we all know just how tight money is. It's imperative that we keep the business rolling as usual, and every day we go unpaid we're getting closer and closer to dealing with some serious issues in both the short term and the long term,"" said Manuel.Manuel took in a long slow breath, then looked at his secretary with something like hope in his eyes.""Precisely. This could be the answer to our prayers: it will solve many problems we're facing due to these unpaid debts.""Manuel thought about this and agreed with Annieerley. The customers who were in debt to Jordan Truck & Haul were professional resources of the company, but they were also long-standing friends. Manuel wasn't prepared to lose these relationships just because they were having financial issues at the moment. Manuel knew that the economy had taken a hit and he knew that it would probably be a long time before things started to look up again. That unknown amount of time could create a disaster situation for both of them if he wasn't careful in how these debtors were handled. Of course he didn't want to lose any more money, but he didn't want to lose business either.""Let me go over this tonight Annie, and thankyou."" Annie nodded, satisfied with her work, and she left the office feeling quite content in the knowledge that she had helped Manuel keep the shirt on his back, and possibly hers too.Manuel stayed at his desk for a long time, looking over the details they hadn't discussed during their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Jordan Truck & Haul with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. In fact, Jordan could receive up to fifty-percent cash advances upon load pick-ups. As a man who hated binding contracts with no room to breathe, he was pleased to see that this factoring company would not make him sign a long term contract, would not make him pay any sign up fees and there was no minimum volume required.""Well, I'll have to tell Walter about this,"" Manuel muttered to himself. His son-in-law Walter had liked the idea of Jordan so much and revered his father in law for having such business acumen that only two years before, he had gathered the venture capital to begin his own transportation service company. Manuel knew then what struggles Walter would face but he encouraged him nonetheless. With the economy the way it was, if an established company such as Jordan was struggling then the little guys, like Walter, were going to be in even more trouble. But, maybe the answer for both of them was in freight factoring, and Manuel was going to find out very soon.A few months later after going through the entire application process and having the experts review his accounts receivable, credit history and statements, Manuel found himself beginning to dig his way out of the hole his delinquent account holders had created for him. They adopted reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped wasting their own precious time trying to collect debts. They used that time to refocus their efforts in being competitive in new territories. Manuel looked back on the dismal months of life before freight factoring and almost shuddered at the thought. He probably wouldn't be in business today had he not learned just in time about freight factoring.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story The phone was ringing on his desk, and Marvin Harrison just sat there letting it ring. He let his morning coffee cool and left his cigarette to ash itself in the tray, because he is trying to make the biggest decision ever for his trucking company. Harrison Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Marvin had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

Marvins father had started as an owner-operator and had grown Harrison Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet over forty years. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Marvin's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had lived long enough to witness the price of hires drop during the recession and watch the eruption of fuel prices afterwards. Now the company was solely in Marvins hands and he wanted to live to see it in better shape for his sons.

To move Harrison Trucking Company ahead into the future, he needed a steady cash flow but there was just not enough money to go around. His employees needed to be paid. They all have families and the usual household bills. A few of the refrigerated trailers really needed some maintenance, and in order to stay competitive he really wanted to invest in specialized haulers to meet the increasing requests for loads of agricultural and energy equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Harrison Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Marvin chuckled, thinking about his father. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? He smiled to himself as he remembered his father poking fun at the other drivers who switched to automatic, even though automatic was quite obviously more efficient (though less manly). He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Marvin knew he was right in his forward thinking. How would he take Harrison Trucking to the next level? More importantly, how could he afford it? Business funding was tied up in fuel bills and the mortgage for the garage and office. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

He wondered about factoring - was this the answer for him? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded a lot like ninth grade algebra which just didnt feel like it belonged as part of the trucking business. A factoring company actually purchases your invoices and takes control of your accounts receivable, payment being a certain percentage of the amount invoiced. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Marvin to do his homework. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. Well, what was the point of going to a factoring company if there was shady business like that going on?

But it turned out to be quite easy. All the factoring companies he researched were open about their business practices and very friendly on the phone when he called. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He was quite happy to sign an exclusive contract. In fact, he was quite pleased with the idea of a long-term contract because he knew this was a one-off and he wouldn't have to keep going back and forth to different companies. He was not charged for a credit check, and in addition he was offered a fuel advance on the pick-up of a load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. Also he was happy to hear how much he was offered in terms of percentages on the freight bills. It was good money.

It was really refreshing dealing with the factoring people. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. He was relieved to note that the factoring companies understood the trucking business and discussed business with him like a respected client, not like someone looking for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. All the factoring company was interest in was the credit of his customers and on their reliability: this worked great for Marvin because he and his father had created a very strong and loyal list of clientele over the years. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldn't have any problems, nor would they think poorly of Harrison Trucking, because the factoring companies handle themselves in such a polite and professional manner, similar to the way his father had managed the business in the past.

Marvin stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. He felt exhilarated by the new possibilities that would make the future of the company fun again and put the stress of the difficult times behind him. With the capabilities of this new cash flow, Marvin could actually expand Harrison Trucking Company further across the country and perhaps even go international into Canada. His heart felt full knowing his sons wouldnt have to worry about money because of the right decisions he had made for their trucking business.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? asked Robertua Butler, reclining back into his chair and crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Robertua smiled at him, shaking her head. No, not exactly, she stated.Robertua was the owner of a small trucking company which had fallen on some hard times recently. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Robert. His company was called Neal Trucking, named after both of his grandfathers, Hector and Ken. They had both been hardworking men, and had done a lot to make Robertua the same.Disaster had struck half a year ago, when two trucks in Roberts fifteen truck fleet went down. One was involved in a very costly accident, and the other simply rolled over, and headed to the trucking graveyard. Robertua depended on his full fleet, and missing two trucks was devastating . Furthermore, buying a whole new truck and fixing the other simply took more cash than Robertua had on hand.A big problem a lot of trucking companies came across was how bills were paid in the industry. Waiting a month or longer for bills to be paid was quite normal. This system works okay as long as no problems arise, but if they do, then things can get quite sticky.Robertua was an excellent business man, and he certainly hadn't done anything wrong. Things had happened that he couldn't have predicted, and he had to figure out a way to keep his business from hurting, or even going under.Thats where the woman across the desk came in. Her name was Glenda and she worked for a factoring company. He had accidentally come across her company one night when he was working late, searching the internet to see if there was some solution to his financial dilemma. She sat there now, and explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. That way were protected from a complete loss, but youre protected from the outrageous fees you would find in a loan from the bank.Robertua agreed. It sounded perfect - perhaps too good?.Glenda laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she said. No, I do, I just think it sounds a bit too good to be true. I actually thought I might end up losing my business.Glenda smiled, agreeing. Yes, we get a lot of that. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. You work hard, youve put everything you can into it. Sometimes you need help. That's why we do what we do.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. No problem - I'm just down the road. We normally do it all online but I was happy to come and visit you today, said Glenda with a smile. Let's work out a solution to your problem. And right there and then they created a business profile. Robertua completed the form, with Glenda offering advice as needed.

The completed profile gave Glenda and her company all the information they needed on Robert's business, and with this information they would determine if this business would in fact be suitable for Factoring. Unfortunately, not all companies are. Some were beyond factoring special brand of help, and sometimes things werent even dire enough for it. Listening as Robertua filled out his form, Glenda was pretty sure he was a perfect candidate for factoring. When the form was done Glenda took it and slid it into her briefcase. Standing up, she reached over the desk and shook Robert's hand. He also stood up, and they smiled at each other. They said their goodbyes and Robertua walked her to the door, and then returned to his office. All his staff members were there, all seven who worked in his office. Sitting behind his desk once more he could hear the familiar sounds of his office workers going about their daily business. He leaned back and closed his eyes. He felt so drained: he had been flailing helplessly for so long, he just knew his business was going to collapse and probably take him with it. Talking to Glenda though, learning about factoring, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He relaxed into his chair, running his hand through his thick black hair with its telling streaks of grey. All those long, sleepless nights. The sudden panic attacks, not matter where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He wasnt out of the woods yet, there was still a lot of work to be done, but he could feel it. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems. His mind wandered back to the very beginning, when he first started his business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been really successful. Offering home cooking in his own hometown, his business had really prospered. But it wasn't what he really wanted to do. His passion didnt lie with the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took six months off, and during that time he decided to create Neal Trucking. So he did it. Once again he built a company from the ground up. He had been successful. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was nearing fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But he couldnt give up. Just the thought of shutting down, cutting his losses, laying off his workers - the whole thing made him physically sick some nights. He didn't want to quit - both for himself and for his staff members. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Robertua opened his eyes, sat forward, turned his computer on. He had lots to do. There would be plenty of time later to be thankful, but for now it was time to get back to work.

Why Trucking Agencies Use Factoring Companies.

As the operator of your own business, you may well be more than conscious already of the difficulty in making sure that capital matters do not become a predicament down the line. Anyway, the worst thing that can potentially happen for your firm is to find yourself dragged in a long and complicated situation that leaves you forever trying to find the cash you need on an ongoing basis.

For pretty much any firm in this instance, the issue can come for waiting for work to clear up and actually be settled into your account. Bill of sales, checks, and the like can take a long time to actually to beprocessed which may leave you with temporary capital dilemmas. Fortunately, there are alternatives out there for industries to explore-- and just one of these is factoring firms.

Factoring companies will, in trade for your statements, supply you with the money immediately to ensure you don't have to worry about the waiting phase that could make paying the expenses and acquiring toolsmore complicated. With this type of setup, invoice factoring can become extraordinarily practical for several businesses who need to get out of a cash pitfall which they have found themselves in.

Since, basing on the scale of the project, it can take up to 60 days for a number of business enterprises to get compensated then it's vital to take care of your own back and definitely not leave yourself money short to pay the costs. After all, how many companies have two months revenue just occupying there to address all their overheads till they earn?

This is particularly true of trucking firms. They have the tendency to manage great deals of accounts which means a significant volume of collection period entails business owner themselves. Trying to get paid promptly can eventually become an extraordinary inconvenience and this is exactly why you employ truck factoring agencies who are thrilled to help out truckers particularly.

As most of us know, trucking is an astonishingly massive industry with many firms out there working with hundreds of vehicle drivers. Sadly, numerous of these drivers land up in finances predicaments simply because they are still anticipating work from six weeks in the past to actually pay them. When this is the scenario for a trucking business, depending on factoring firms for support maybe the very best alternative left.

This indicates that a trucking corporation can pay out the paychecks of the people, keep all the vehicles filled with gas and continue to escalate, progress and expand without continually waiting for the resources which is taking too prolonged to come in. Trucking Enterprises running without a factoring program put in place are leaving themselves at considerable threat, as competitors cash out fast and proceed to expand.

There's honestly not a thing to be stressed about when it comes to employing a Factoring business-- they commonly are not like a bank or somebody who is going to leave you with a significant heap of debt to pay back. You give them legitimate invoices from work you have already wrapped up , you are simply facilitating the repayment system.

In the United States, where truck agencies succeed, factoring companies are not considered accepting loan of in any capacity. This private agreement then allows both groups to profit and take joy in a comfortable future-- it provides the factoring provider a guaranteed resource of profit to add to the list and it supplies the trucking company the required cash that they worked hard to acquire.

The trucking enterprise provides their invoices to the factoring firm. The trucking factoring company then obtain the payment amounts from the trucking company's clients. Factoring has beenaround for hundreds of years and has been utilized for long times by plenty of diverse business-- but none much more so than truckers. While you may well lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending on who you team up with, it signifies that you are receiving the money today and can actually start off setting the money to perform.

Anyway, an IOU or an invoice is definitely not going to cover spendings, is it? For trucking establishments when the funds can be very good one day and gone the next, it's up to the vehicle drivers to work sensibly and to make sure they are leaving themselves with a considerable amount of time and finance to get through the week till they are paid once again.

So the next moment your trucking enterprise is having some momentary capital troubles and you are putting in an excessive amount of time chasing inactive paying clients, why not start off thinking about making use of a factoring companies as a manner to get your money and give yourself a more at ease future in the eyes of your trucking crew and your bank dividend?

Bank Loans

Bank loans are an extremely traditional way for a business to get financing. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. For example, a fairly newly established business simply may not have the assets to readily get a loan from a bank, even if they do, the standard collateral for a business loan is the business itself, which means that if you cannot make your loan payment, you risk losing your entire business. Plus, the amount you apply for through the bank is the actual amount that you are going to receive. Of course, once that loan has been re-paid, you can always re-apply for another loan.

Trucking Factoring Companies

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. Rather the financing you receive from a Trucking Factoring company is based on money your business has already earned, but have not yet received. The Trucking Factoring company purchases your accounts receivable, or part of them, for a certain percentage of their value - this is normally about 80-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once a Trucking Factoring account has been created for you, it will continue for as long as you need it, with the money available continuing to grow as your business grows, and providing cash as you require it.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

While not every business can take advantage of Trucking Factoring account financing (you have to have a business that has account receivables) for those that can use this type of financing there are several distinct benefits.

1. You Won't Incur Debt. You don't incur debt as you do with a bank loan because the Trucking Factoring company actually purchases your accounts receivable. One of the main benefits of this kind of financing is that your business credit rating and your personal credit rating won't be affected. In the event that your business fails, you wouldn't have to be concerned about someone coming after your personal or your business assets in order to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. No Collateral Required. Another benefit of using a Trucking Factoring company instead of a traditional loan is that you aren't required to provide collateral to the Trucking Factoring company in order to secure financing, because the company buys the accounts receivables; not loans you money based on them. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This makes it easier for fledgling businesses to get the financing they need through a Trucking Factoring company (as long as their accounts receivables are in good order) then from a bank, who may not feel that you have been in business long enough to be worth the risk of issuing you a loan.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. With a Trucking Factoring company you can actually get the money you need faster. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. Unlike a bank loan that continues to build interest that you have to pay the entire time you have your business loan with a Trucking Factoring company, you don't have to continue to pay interest as they take it right off the top, deducting it from the total amount of accounts receivable. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. However, there are also a couple of other benefits that a factory company can offer your business is far beyond the scope of the bank. The main benefit is that once you've sold your accounts receivable to the Trucking Factoring company, you are free from having to collect money owed by your customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very good at collecting these debts, saving you the time and effort that you need to devote to your growing company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
